The Story Behind PopUp Karaoke
PopUp Karaoke started in 2020, in the middle of a pandemic, during a time when people were desperate for any reason to come together. I'm Daniel — a U.S. Army veteran from NW Indiana — and what began as a way to bring some life back to my community turned into something I couldn't have predicted: a full-time mobile karaoke operation that has run hundreds of events across Northwest Indiana and the greater Chicago area.
Before PopUp Karaoke, my background was service. The military taught me things that I carry into every event: show up prepared, don't cut corners, be the most reliable person in the room. When I started doing karaoke shows, I brought the same standard to the mic stand. You get there early. You set up right. You don't leave until the client is happy. That's not a business model — it's just how I was raised and trained.
Why Karaoke?
It sounds like a simple question, but the honest answer is that karaoke is one of the only entertainment formats that makes strangers into friends. Think about what actually happens at a karaoke night: someone who was standing at the back of the room, arms crossed, insisting they weren't going to sing — ends up at the front of the room at 11pm, getting a standing ovation. That transformation is real. It happens at almost every single event we run.
Music is the fastest path to a feeling. When someone hears the opening notes of a song they grew up with, they're not standing in a banquet hall anymore — they're back in the car with their best friend at 17, or at a school dance, or at a concert they saved up for. Karaoke takes that private feeling and makes it communal. That's what I got addicted to watching happen, and it's why I built a business around it.
